Amazon.com edges out Walmart on Black Friday online traffic

While Walmart dominated Thanksgiving Day online traffic, Amazon.com saw the most traffic on Black Friday, which is the traditional beginning of the holiday sales season.

Experian Hitwise reported that Amazon was the top-visited retail web site among the top 500 retail sites. Overall traffic to retail web sites was up 4 percent on Black Friday compared to Thanksgiving Day, the day before. But year over year, traffic was down 9 percent compared to Black Friday a year ago.

See Twitter Trends Around Your Neighborhood with GeoMeme

In a recent post on Twitter’s new geolocation feature and the kinds of apps it would allow developers to create, we received a comment from Bob Hitching telling us to check out GeoMeme.

GeoMeme is Hitching’s side project, a real-time web app and also a location-aware mobile web app for iPhone and Android phones. It allows users to see and compare trends in specific locations; for example, you could see the most tweeted-about musicians performing at an award show or the most-tweeted political buzzwords in a given state or town.

Rubik’s 360

rubiks-360

This year, why not give the gift of frustration? Check out the Rubik’s 360, a new take on the traditional Rubik’s Cube.

This one comes sans edges and consists of a larger plastic ball which contains 2 additional smaller spheres within it – each one suspended on an independent rotating axis.

The objective is to tilt and turn the Rubik’s 360 and guide each of the 6 colored balls through a series of holes until they reach their destination hole on the outer sphere, matching each ball to its respective color slot. It’s difficult just trying to explain it. Thank goodness for pictures. :)

Twitter Japan’s new monetization plan: Premium content

Twitter Japan will start allowing “premium” tweeters to charge readers a fee, said an executive at Twitter’s Japanese partner.

The announcement comes from Kenichi Sughi, an executive at Digital Garage, whose remarks at the Mobidec 2009 conference were reported by local news sources and then summarized by Media Asia. It’s not entirely clear what users would have to pay to read – other sites picking up on the news are describing it as a way to charge for access to tweets, but Media Asia says “the plan will allow audiences to view some text on all pages but will charge a fee to unlock access to certain images, URLs, and text.” Readers could pay a monthly subscription fee, or a one-time fee to access specific content.

What are Google’s real motivations behind Chrome OS?

Chrome OS is Google’s latest entry into the consumer space. It is designed to be an operating system that runs on customized hardware and provides the user with only a state-of-the art browser running HTML-5 and some plugins. The tech (and mainstream) media has seen no shortage of opinions about its meaning and future impact on the industry. Unfortunately, I think most people have missed some of the key implications of Chrome OS.

Free and Better Demo Music with ccMixter

This post is part of our .

If I see another screencast using the iMovie default songs, I’m going to go nuts. Music sets the tone for how you want others to perceive your company and choosing a generic soundtrack is like branding yourself boring. In the past, videographers were forced to work with lawyers to gain appropriate licenses for samples. Thanks to the Free Music Archive and a number of other services, we’re free to use original songs while still maintaining the rights to attribution. This morning’s launch of the Free Music Archive’s guest curation series further expands on this environment of collaboration.

Volvo IT Department Gets Banned From Wikipedia For Racist Rants

One of the risks facing any enterprise is how to deal with people who use the corporate network to post rude, sexist or even racist material on public facing web sites.

That issue is coming home to roost for Volvo, following the news that Wikipedia has banned editing from machines inside the Volvo IT Department for racist remarks left on the pages of two well-known Pakistani Cricket players.

According to the Channel Register, someone in the Volvo IT Department wrote a number of racist remarks in articles about two Pakistani cricket players: Wasim Akram and Inzamam-ul-Haq. The IP Address, 192.138.116.230, maps back to the Volvo IT Department.
